EARTH SYSTEMS SCIENCE AND POLICY

ESSP

A. MAJOR REQUIREMENT:

ESSP Major Learning Outcome (MLO) #11: SERVICE LEARNING
All ESSP Students must demonstrate ability to combine disciplinary knowledge and community experiences to share the relevance and importance of science with culturally, linguistically, technologically, and economically diverse populations in the context of issues of social responsibility, justice, diversity and compassion.

C. CAPSTONES
ESSP Service Learning Capstone Projects:
ESSP Service Learning Capstones are for students who wish to make service learning a significant part of their capstone experience. A service learning capstone will also fulfill students' upper-division ESSP Service Learning Requirement. Students who would like to participate in a service learning capstone must:

  • Enroll in 2-units of ESSP 497SL, Independent Service Learning.
  • Secure their own service learning placements (possibly with the help of the Service Learning Institute).
  • Work with a faculty service learning advisor (e.g. Laura Lee Lienk).
  • Meet Service Learning Requirements (e.g. work within a multicultural community, have a minimum of 30 hours of direct public contact, keep a journal of ongoing reflection related to your service learning experience).
  • Obtain approval from your major advisor.
